By William M. Esposo
AS I WRECK THIS CHAIR

No matter how you cut it, the controversial TRO (Temporary Restraining Order) that was granted by the Supreme Court (SC) last Tuesday by a vote of 8 to 5, effectively allowing Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) and her husband Mike Arroyo to leave the country, transcends legal considerations. It has now played into the political reality of people of the Philippines versus Gloria and Mike Arroyo.

The perceived rush by SC Chief Justice Renato Corona to come home from abroad, the speed by which the SC eventually heard the merits of the case and issued the controversial TRO, the fact that all eight Justices voting in favor of granting the TRO were GMA appointees — all these put the High Court in a big very bad light.

While it’s said that the SC is ‘apolitical’ and should be purely engaged in what are legal issues brought before it, it cannot be denied that the SC also has to retain public acceptance and approval. To be perceived by the public as ‘partial to GMA or Mike Arroyo’ in a period where there is a big demand for closure to all the GMA and Mike Arroyo issues — puts the SC in a vulnerable position.

Senator Kiko Pangilinan best described the fix that the SC now finds itself in. He said: “For the sake of the credibility and image of the Supreme Court, I hope that their decision and the safeguards they have put in place will be sufficient to ensure the Arroyos return because if they do not, then the Supreme Court must be ready to take the flak from a public disgusted with abuse and corruption in government.”

In trying to immediately leave the country just hours after the SC TRO was announced, the Arroyos deepened public perception that they’re running away from their cases. All over social media, many saw this as an indication of a perceived ‘collusion’ between the Arroyos and the eight Justices who voted to grant the TRO. Seen by many as ‘always siding with the Arroyos’ — the SC will then be perceived as an accomplice to their escape.

The SC may lay claim to being the ultimate arbiter in legal issues but it must realize that the SC holds no such powers in the Court of Public Opinion. In the Court of Public Opinion, Chief Justice Rene Corona and the seven others who voted to grant the TRO are mere public servants under the scrutiny of Juan de la Cruz. If the Arroyos, as suspected by many, decide not to return, the eight Justices who voted to grant the TRO will be held accountable. If the administration opts to file impeachment cases against the eight Justices who allowed the Arroyos to leave, then that could not have been done under more favorable political conditions.

With the way public opinion has been playing in this issue, it’s clear that legal arguments will not decide it in the Court of Public Opinion — especially in a situation when there are GMA SC appointees involved. The SC should realize that they have staked their reputation, unwittingly perhaps, on a couple that is greatly distrusted by Filipinos.

All those Senate hearings about the PNP helicopter scam, the 2007 Elections cheating in Muslim Mindanao and the DBP loans to Roberto Ongpin have deepened negative public perception of the Arroyos. At the same time, with new credible witnesses testifying to all these issues against the Arroyos, the public demand for closure has been intensified. This could be a political perfect storm that will confront the SC.

When push comes to shove — that means the administration opts to play hardball — the seven who voted with Chief Justice Rene Corona will be caught in a lopsided contest. The impeachment of former Ombudsman Merci Gutierrez showed the administration numbers in the House of Representatives. The same defenders of Merci during her impeachment cannot hope to do better in an impeachment against the eight SC Justices. Merci’s fault was inaction. The issue against the eight SC Justices will be bad action.

The SC cannot afford to see this as purely a legal debate. It’s a public debate and in this public debate, they are the ones who are under question and need to prove their case credibly. The SC must understand that of the 15 million who voted for President Noynoy Aquino (P-Noy) during the 2010 Presidential Election, many were primed by the national clamor to eradicate corruption.

GMA is now being lined up by the nation to account for the climate of impunity that characterized her regime. Prosecuting the case against GMA is an administration that is largely perceived as honest and sincere. This accounts for the lopsided comments on text messages sent to radio and TV polls as well as entries on social media favoring the P-Noy administration despite all the legal arguments that have been stated and all that appeal to emotion that GMA’s spokesperson and lawyers have been doing.

Kindness and pity cannot be expected from a nation that believes they have been abused, cheated and grossly misgoverned. In such a public frame of mind, the demand for justice and closure will dominate.

7.6 million People die of cancer each year according to a study done by the World Health Organization. With the number of deaths globally being accounted to cancer, early cancer detection would be vital in saving lives. The ClearCyte™ technologyto be introduced by Pharmacanada was invented at the British Columbia Cancer Agency in Canada and further developed by PMI Labs of Vancouver Canada.

“We at Pharmacanada would like to provide Filipinos with reliable yet affordable early cancer detection in a less invasive process,” said Guil Rivera, President of PharmaCanada, Inc. The technology which is the first of its kind will be set up in a Cytology Laboratory as part of the Anatomic Department of St. Dominic Medical Center.

Dr. Rolandela Rosa (in photo), pathologistis now in Canada enhancing his skills and expertise. Dr dela Rosa is the Head of Anatomic and Clinical Laboratory Department of Jose Abad Santos General Hospital in Binondo, Manila, Nueva Ecija Doctor’s Hospital and St. Dominic Medical Center in Bacoor, Cavite. He is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), College of Medicine and Surgery, and an active member of the Medical Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in UST and an Associate Pathologist of the Anatomic and Clinical Laboratory Department of World City Medical Center.

Screening and early detection of cancer

Early detection of cancer greatly increases the chances for successful treatment.

There are two major components of early detection of cancer: education to promote early diagnosis and screening.

Recognizing possible warning signs of cancer and taking prompt action leads to early diagnosis.

Screening refers to the use of simple tests across a healthy population in order to identify individuals who have disease, but do not yet have symptoms.

Being right is not a rule in war. Might is the only rule in war
By Mang Juan Pinoy

A confrontation of one who is right and one who has might

A day after China dispatched its biggest civilian patrol boat to the disputed Spratlys, the Philippines deployed its biggest warship, the Rajah Humabon, to what it described as territorial waters in the West Philippine Sea.

Although it is the biggest, BRP Humabon is also the oldest warship of the Philippine Navy.

Reed Bank is located 80 miles off Palawan and 576 miles from China. So 576 miles is obviously greater than the 200 miles of exclusive economic zone provided under United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Why should there be a dispute if we are in compliance to international law?

Our enemy is not just China bully alone

China’s recent territorial bullying on Spratlys is the price our country has to pay for having wealth and resources of government wrecked by perpetual corruption. And I am sure these brilliant corrupt trapo familes knows who they are and what they did and are still doing.

Our country is facing threat of territorial aggression.

Our military is unprepared to defend our sovereignty in the disputed territories.

Obviously, our government with depleted funds cannot afford an head-on conflict with China.

Thanks to our modernized corruption.

And vintage greed.

One of the more famous of Jose Rizal’s critiques is: “What is the use of independence if the slaves of today will be the tyrants of tomorrow?”

That criticism is as applicable then as it is today. Our country needs servant leaders, not the politicians that self-interest and greed dictate.

We celebrate our 113 years of independence today but the struggle remains.

And the irony is all our colonizers are now better off without us and the Filipinos remain slaves abused by the stolen wealth of political dynasties and prisoners trapped in a culture of corruption.

Wellness Philippines
By Mang Juan Pinoy

Affordability, and of course expertise

Philippines is definitely one of the Asian countries where you can get the best alternative medical care treatment for less.

Medical treatment in the Philippines is extremely cheap. Medicinal plants and herbs are often used in the treatment of certain medical conditions here in our country. Alternative herbal medicines and treatments are popular among locals in the Philippines, but the government is yet to promote aggressively this field of health care to global medical tourism. The lower costs of medical treatment plus competent English-speaking and excellent trained medical specialists, nurses and caregivers placed the Philippines on the map of medical tourism.

Should prescription cannabis be a medical option?

Medical tourism is all about going on a vacation and getting treated at the same time. And that’s not all – after your medical vacation you will be able to recuperate in surroundings that are conducive to healing.

Medical cannabis is the use of cannabis as a physician-recommended form of medicine or herbal therapy. Cannabis is one of the most beneficial and therapeutically active substances known to man.

It does have several well-documented beneficial effects and can be use for medical treatment and health care under a strictly secured, isolated and controlled environment facility conducive to healing and wellness.

And Philippines is a perfect destination to offer a wellness center medical cannabis dispensary prescribing an alternative medicinal herbal treatment to cure pain and diseases.

Medical conditions under cannabis treatment

Medical cannabis can be a safe and effective treatment for the symptoms of cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, pain, glaucoma, epilepsy, and other conditions. Here are some of the health conditions that can be addressed by proper medical cannabis treatment.

1. Medical cannabis doctors put priority for this treatment to patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Medical cannabis has the ability to stimulate a person’s hunger which is useful for cancer patients.

2. People suffering from chronic body pain can use cannabis treatment instead of other commercial pain killers. Correct dosage of medical cannabis is safer than ingesting pain killers.

3. Psychiatric problems such as anxiety attacks are also suppressed by medical cannabis. Many anxiety patients are granted rights to purchase from cannabis dispensary as needed.

We become No.1 at least cost

According to the Philippine Department of Tourism, the number of internationally based medical tourists has increased from 60,000 patients in 2007 to a staggering 600,000 patients in 2009. The Philippine government predicts billions of dollars in medical tourism profits, with as many as 1,000,000 annual foreign patients by the year 2015.

The government should explore wellness center medical cannabis dispensary as a marketable health care option if they are realistic in attaining the level of anticipated success of it’s 2015 billion dollars profit target.

Government initiatives should focus on scientific studies, research and experiments on the the benefits of medical cannabis as an alternative medical treatment in our country exclusively catered to medical tourists from all over the world that will boost Philippines as the No.1 destination of medical tourism in Asia Pacific Region.

RH bill is giving those who have less in life a chance
By Mang Juan Pinoy

“Always give an option in your arguments before you oppose. If you understand what you are exactly opposing to, then you will know what your options are. “

RH bill does not attempt to legalize what is already legal

Family planning and artificial birth control is absolutely legal. With or without the RH bill passed into law, couples have already unlimited access to contraceptives over the counter even prior to the RH bill. This is a legitimate fact.

“Common sense is always right.”

RH bill only makes it available for free to the poor

People with money and access to education are not the targets of the RH bill. The bill is not meant to serve just Catholics. It’s supposed to serve every single Filipino, particularly the poor. Unless you are anti-poor?

Why is the Church is scared of giving the poor informed choices? Even Adam and Eve were allowed to exercise free will.

“If Church teachings are so effective, the faithful will reject pills and condoms even if given away for free.”

Sacred life begins at fertilization and not at implantation

A sperm cell is not an unborn child in the same way that pollen is not an unborn plant.

The argument is contraceptives are abortifacients. Anti-RH advocates argue that life begins at the moment of fertilization (and not much later, at the moment of implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus). How can a condom be an abortifacient when, literally and scientifically, there is no fertilized egg yet to abort? How can one say that life begins at fertilization but you can end life even before it begins? Ovulation is different to fertilization, no fertilization no abortion.

Using the calendar or contraceptives to prevent fertility of the egg both prevents life. So both are murder if you insists preventing fertility is abortion.

The best way to prevent abortions is to prevent unwanted pregnancies, in which RH Bill is intended to.

“The bill doesn’t endorse or promote abortion but the Church insists it does – but presents no proof except its say-so.”

RH bill does not discriminates against the Catholic Church

Anti-RH advocates says that the RH bill discriminates against the Catholic Church because it goes against the of Catholic teachings and the law must respect the religion of majority of Filipinos. They further argued that the state must be neutral to religion. Detractors must make up their mind. Either we are a secular state or are we Vatican?

“RH is exclusive for any Filipinos who needs it, wants it, but cannot afford it. Others who does not need it, want it and can afford it is very much entitled not to support RH.”

The RH bill does not encroach on the religious beliefs of traditional Catholics

Under the RH bill, all couples are free to choose how many children they want and, if they so choose, what family planning method to use. It guarantees free and informed choice. It remains neutral on what method a couple chooses for themselves. It doesn’t impose any choice on anybody. Traditional Catholics are absolutely and completely free to follow their faith, have unprotected sex and give birth to all the children they want.

However, what the RH bill secures is equal freedom to parents who believe differently—who would plan the spacing and number of children. It is to provide information, freedom of choice and to have access to contraceptives for those who cannot afford it.

Neither the government nor the church has the right to stop people from practicing responsible parenthood whichever way they prefer.

“The freedom to believe is the freedom to choose accordingly to what one believes and not imposing your beliefs on people you don’t even know.”

You disregard the intent, you abused the status of separation of power

The church loves the poor. Taxes paid to the state are spent on the poor. So why don’t churches pay taxes?

The church does not pay taxes, they are exempted. This only means that the billions they collected during mass and other services go directly to the church’s coffers depriving the government additional revenue to spend for social services.

An exemption for churches from taxes ensures a “wall of separation between between church and state”. Tax free status is accorded provided the church stayed out of politics and likewise no way the state can tell a church what to do.

You cannot enjoy tax exemption and even get government money for cash donations and yet interfere with state affairs. You cannot do both.

“Tax exemption is a privilege, not a right.”

But where natural method fails, science always works

Catholic doctrine-based arguments are constitutionally acknowledged and politically persuasive, in terms of debating strategy. If the Church can’t convince through its own theological arguments, it has no right to do so by dictate of tax boycott or excommunication sanction. If it can’t convince its followers then admittedly then they must had a failed method.

“The RH bill is all about choices. Not abortion. It is the right to exercise free will. You convince us we are wrong and not threaten us that you are right.”

Enhanced pro-poor family planning bill passed into law

More than 560,000 squatter families in Metro Manila will be relocated and receive 2 hectares of farm land each under the administration’s flagship program on illegal settlers. Pres. Aquino III said government had identified some 1.5 million hectares of farmland that could be distributed to the poor squatters.

If successfully implemented, this relocation and livelihood agenda to addressed poverty alleviation back-to-back with an enhanced pro-poor family planning bill passed into law can pave way to the biggest government project ever initiated to finally stop hunger and poverty in our country.

The RH bill does not claim to solve widespread poverty because it WILL NOT. However, enacting this bill into law will help to diminish the ‘cycle of poverty’. If one is born poor, it is very difficult to overcome it, especially for the miserable poor with continuing unwanted pregnancies.

A vote for RH is a vote for the poor.

“We are not an over populated country with unexplained poverty. What we have become is a nation over populated by politicians with unexplained greed.”

A reproductive idea for all

Instead of rejecting the bill in its entirety, the RH bill proponents should insert a pro-life provision to likewise make equally available and accessible fertility, sterility and sex potency pills to treat couples who suffers from sexual reproduction disorders and sexual dysfunction and cannot afford to have a child.

“Every baby is a blessing, it’s true, but every child is also a serious major responsibility.”

Billion pesos of taxpayer’s money to subsidize reproductive choices

Based on National Census Statistics Board data 2000, about 24% of the Philippine population is above 20 years old. Based on the same statistics, about 50% of that are females.

“Considering we have a total population of about 90 million that means the total population of Filipinos above 20 years old is about 22 million. Half of that would be 11 million females. This is the present target market for contraceptives. If I am not mistaken, based on what I have found out from the internet, the cost of using birth control pills is about P1,000 a month.

“The total potential value of the market in the Philippines is therefore computed to be: 11 million x P1,000 per month x 12 months or a total of P132 billion per year. The problem for the contraceptive manufacturers is that 90 percent of the market belongs to the lower income who cannot afford to spend P1,000 per month. So in order to give this market purchasing power, the RH Bill is now being pushed to enable the government to use taxpayer’s money to subsidize these contraceptives.

“To further expand the market, the 10 to 15 years old will be given sex education in school and they will be allowed to purchase contraceptives even without the consent of their parents. That could mean another 4,000,000 potential users. The value of this additional market is calculated to be another P48 billion. Adding the two markets gives us a whooping valuation of P180 billion per year. Now I understand why the RH Bill is being pushed very hard. (Source: Philstar.com)

Some pro-RH bill advocates are skeptical that there is a hidden agenda by lobbyists led by contraceptive manufacturers that want to market easy their products openly in the country using taxpayers money. Fact is, they’re now sold all over the country. However, very few are buying them.

Both RH bill opponents and supporters should instead pay attention and scrutinize the provision of the RH bill enabling the government to pay the multinational pharmaceutical companies multi-billions of pesos using taxpayer’s money to subsidize the RH bill program.

If funds allocated for family planning do not go to their beneficiaries, corruption would be institutionalized if the RH bill becomes a law. A staggering amount can be a breeding ground for greed and become a future multi-billion pesos plunder scandal once the landmark law is passed.

We need to strictly safeguard fiscal provisions in the RH bill as the last thing we will not allow are to become instruments of corruption conspiracy in process.

Vigilance. Vigilance.

But do we really need a law to make these life choices?

Rhythm method of family planning and condoms are no different.
Both prevents fertilization.
One uses rubber.
The other math.

Abstinence does not work.
You do not push down poverty by doing nothing.

HOLLYWOOD, California—The boxing genius of Manny Pacquiao includes feet that belong in “Riverdance,” calves the size of grapefruits and deceptive power generated from his core.

His movement is unorthodox, scattered and perpetual, as if designed by a jazz musician. He creates angles unlike any other fighter, past or present, appearing, disappearing, shifting, striking; on balance, off balance, even off one foot.

It is this style—part performance art, part technical wizardry, unique to Pacquiao—that defines perhaps the best boxer of his generation. And it started with a videotape of the martial artist who became his idol. It started with Bruce Lee.

Last month, as Pacquiao molded his style specific to Shane Mosley, his welterweight opponent on Saturday in Las Vegas, he wrapped his hands inside the dressing room at the Wild Card boxing gym here. To explain the way he fights, he settled on three words.
“Like Bruce Lee,” he said.

Growing up in the Philippines, Pacquiao studied Lee, watching his movies on endless loops. He still often views his collector’s set. “Enter the Dragon” is his favorite. His conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, says he believes Pacquiao built his baseline movement off Lee’s template, the continual attacking, the feet drummed in and out.

“Bruce Lee jumped around and kicked his feet and shook his head and shoulders,” Ariza said. “His feet moved in concert with his hands. He could be choppy, but he was rhythmic. Manny does the same thing. It comes from that.”

Greatest asset

A stick-thin, one-dimensional left-hander arrived at Wild Card in 2001, his style still reckless, raw. Pacquiao punched at high volume, seeking knockouts, but struggled against superior technicians.

By then, Pacquiao possessed the basics of his skill set. Because he fought with the speed of the boxers he most admired, Pacquiao cornered opponents, made them feel squeezed.

His tempo, sparring partner Shawn Porter said, feels less like 1…2…3 and more like 1-2-3-4-5-6.

If Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, could place one boxing skill above all others, he said, “speed is the greatest asset in the world.” At one workout, even the comedian Don Rickles said Pacquiao reminded him of Sugar Ray Leonard.

The early Pacquiao combined feet that moved like lightning with uncommon power for a man his size, power that started in those calves (his adviser Mike Koncz said thick legs ran in the family) and wound through his torso.

Different fighter

After Erik Morales defeated Pacquiao in 2005, Roach decided Pacquiao needed balance, and Roach set about enhancing his right hand.

In practice, Roach instructed Pacquiao to throw jabs, uppercuts and hooks in three- to four-punch combinations, all right-handed. It took three years, but a different fighter emerged against David Diaz, and Pacquiao later knocked out Ricky Hatton with a right.

Roach divides Pacquiao’s career into two periods: Before the Diaz fight and after. His style had started to take shape.

The next epiphany occurred by accident, when, during training, Pacquiao shifted left, around Roach and tapped his trainer on his left shoulder. “What are you going to do now?” he asked. Roach was stunned.

Back when Roach fought, boxers mostly engaged straight on. His work with Pacquiao, the angles they created, changed the way Roach trained.

If Pacquiao shifted left, outside the right foot of his opponents, their natural instinct was to follow—into his left hand. If opponents chose not to engage, they had one option, to back away.

A matter of angles

Roach says Pacquiao improves his position with each angle created and makes it more difficult to counterpunch.

Roach and Pacquiao design angles specific to each opponent. The key, Roach said, is creating space and confusion.

Roach and Pacquiao did not invent this approach to boxing—Roach cited George Foreman’s 1990 knockout of Gerry Cooney as an earlier example—but they elevated angles into art. Roach sees boxing’s future in Pacquiao’s fancy footwork.

‘Just a freak’

As Pacquiao kept moving up in weight divisions, Roach worried less about the weight or power that Pacquiao could add and more about the speed he could lose. Roach told Ariza, “Do not screw up his speed.”

In all his years, through dozens of world champions, Roach never saw a fighter who gained so much weight and retained speed and power.

As a result, suspicions have been raised that Pacquiao used performance-enhancing drugs, a charge his camp denies. (Pacquiao has never failed a test.) Ariza points to other factors: Different diet, isometric exercises for balance, plyometric exercises for explosiveness.

“He’s also just a freak,” Ariza said. “His resting heart rate in the morning is 42 beats per minute. If he did half the work he does, he would still be where he is today.”

“Whatever plan you have against Pacquiao, he just terminates it,” said Robert Garcia, trainer of junior middleweight Antonio Margarito, whom Pacquiao stopped by technical knockout. “Nobody fights like him—awkward, quick, strong, fast, good reflexes—nobody that complete.”

Poetry in his feet

In recent years, Pacquiao honed the footwork that Roach said he deserved more credit for.

“When he moves,” Roach said, “his footwork is so exact, so perfect, it’s what creates the angles and wins all his fights.” Roach sees poetry when Pacquiao’s feet pump, but less like ballet and more like what Ariza calls “the Riverdance.”

The continual movement makes Pacquiao difficult to time. This disrupts the rhythm of his opponents, forces them to take risks.

“It’s an unpolished but very compelling and original athleticism,” the veteran trainer Joe Goossen said. “It’s not a continuing flow of beauty. It can be herky-jerky. It can be harsh, deliberate, unorthodox. But it’s effective.”

Roach says he wishes Pacquiao would finish opponents sooner, thinks Pacquiao is too nice. But Pacquiao views his style as boxing entertainment. He relishes the stage, revels in the attention.

Ariza has long wanted to test Pacquiao for scientific purposes, for lung capacity, red blood cells, endurance. He could publish his findings in a scientific journal. But Pacquiao wants none of that. Part of his genius remains a mystery and always will.

“Bruce Lee,” Ariza said, “was like that.”

“Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.”

Justice has been done?

The US government failed to SHOW PROOF that Osama was killed in a raid by US forces in Pakistan. There was an Obama speech declaring Osama Bin Laden dead but he failed to substantiate his claim. That makes terrorist leader Osama officially verbally dead.

US personnel identified him by facial recognition but declined to say whether DNA analysis or an autopsy procedure had been used to confirm if the dead body is indeed Osama Bin Laden.

A US official says Bin Laden has been buried at sea. The ‘body of evidence’ was quickly fed to the sharks.

10 years in hiding. Now, Pentagon hides him permanently.

Bin Laden is now fish food with a fake story behind.

A dead opportunity

What we have now is a missing dead body and the truth mysteriously lost into the sea.

“The argument is not whether Osama is dead or alive. Is he alive? Or he may be dead long ago? Who cares? This is only significant to the interest of America. And pentagon made sure the most we can do assume he is dead. Because in absence of any proof except a verbal announcement of a scenario of a CIA kill operation executed allegedly in Pakistan, the declaration of death has no bearing. The evidence of death remains hearsay. Nobody could even sue America because there is no physical evidence except the speech of Obama. Not even Pakistan government. They need to produce the body to substantiate their claims. They buried him into the sea because they do not want his grave to become a shrine? Crap! The safehouse in Pakistan would remain and is destined to become the shrine of Osama to all his followers. No dead body, no murder.”

Osama ‘with body included’ will remain dead. Verbally dead.

I am allergic to bullshit.
